This evening presents the first integral performance of a triptych of works for piano and electronics by Perdu Haapanen, written especially for pianist Paavali Jumppanen.
As well as using electronics, all the pieces concentrate on the relationship between the piano and “cantabile” (“singingly”). In Das Lied, voice meets piano in the sense that the piano “plays” the song. In the piece, the electronics are live, i.e., the acoustically-played timbres affect the nature of those produced electronically, so the work sounds different each time.
Time is a theme addressed via electronics in Mi Noche Triste Revisited based on the tango of the same name. It explores Haapanen’s relationship to the tango and its dimensions, layering the tango rhythms in the texture at different speeds.
The concert ends with a world-premiere that completes the cycle.
