The word commotion refers to the public noise created by a public event. Synonyms include ‘hum’, ‘drone’, ‘sensation’, ‘furore’.

In Kimmo Kuokkala’s (born 1973) work Kirvis (2002) the explosive sounds of the string instruments gradually build into a series of expansive images. The work is joined by the première of Kuokkala’s new piano trio, in which sounds assume an even darker, wider and timeless character.

The master of timbral music, Salvatore Sciarrino (born 1947) is renowned for his delicate works in which sounds seem to float in the air. Sciarrino’s sensitive timbral palette is laid bare in his Tre duetti con l’eco (2006), a work exploring the possibilities of resonant, echoing spaces.

The works of Danish composer Simon Steen Andersen (born 1976) combine musique concrète with an unbridled, carnevalistic spirit. In his work On and Off and To and Fro (2008), the chamber trio is joined by three megaphone players.
